About The Role

We have an exciting new opportunity to join our Personal Injury department in Bristol as a Senior Associate ( Law Cost Draftsman). Based in central Bristol and a short walk from Bristol Temple Meads station, this position will assist the Personal Injury department with their cost recovery, providing general support to all teams when necessary, including with fixed costs cases.

The department has a number of dedicated teams - Motor Portal, Fast-Track Litigation, Non-Motor, Motor ULR and Multi-Track Unit and forms one of the largest claimant departments in the region.

As well as ongoing training, development and continuous support to help you excel in your new role, your day to day duties will include:

  • Drafting and negotiating cost Budgets in compliance with court directions, ensuring all disbursements are accounted for;
  • Drafting and negotiating of Bills, Points of Dispute and Replies in multi-track cases, ensuring all disbursements are accounted for;
  • Conducting costs litigation and draft all necessary court documents;
  • Drafting instructions to counsel in appropriate cases;
  • Providing high quality technical advice and support to all teams when necessary, including with fixed costs cases and Part 8 proceedings;
  • Advising and supporting teams to reduce disbursement write-offs;
  • Preparing detailed advice on cost recovery prospects;
  • Liaising with all parties on a claim to obtain information for cost budgeting to include counsel and experts
  • Advising on and attending CCMCs or Detailed Assessments where necessary;
  • Guiding teams on cost recovery and providing departmental training;
  • Ensuring that paper and electronic files are maintained in good order and that attendance notes are made promptly to maximise cost recovery;
  • Ensuring that all limitation dates and Court deadlines are complied with and properly diarised;
  • Advising and contributing to the development of cost recovery systems within the current case management system;
  • Advising on process measures to improve cost recovery;
  • Complying with the Company’s closure procedure at the completion of a claim; and
  • Assisting other Fee Earners and the Team Leader as directed from time to time.
About You

We are looking for candidates that have:

  • Experience of handling their own cost case load consisting of non-litigated and litigated Claimant personal injury cases;
  • Excellent technical expertise across all areas of costs in personal injury work
  • Previous experience of cost work relating to the handling of E/L, O/L, P/L and RTA work including ULR;
  • Experience of handling and advising on cost work for high value multi track claims including catastrophic injury claims;
  • The ability to work both autonomously and in collaboration with the existing teams;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the CPR;
  • Good negotiation skills along with good advocacy experience;
  • Strong IT skill and experience of working with case management systems;
  • Knowledge of the Code of Conduct; and
  • It is desirable to have supervisory experience as the successful candidate will often act as a referral point for complex queries.
